Movie description:
According to the family tradition, this year the boy should go to Venice with his parents for the first time. However, the war breaks out and he has to hide in the provinces with his mother. They find shelter in the house of crazy aunts who decide to build a Venice for the boy in the basement flooded with water. Dreams of Venice are contrasted with the image of the war and the youngster undergoes a premature initiation into adult life. The film about growing up, love and courage.
The movie is based on a series of short novels, written by Włodzimierz Odojewski: Venice is the story of an 11-years-old Marek, whose dreams of a summer trip to Venice are brutally cut short by the outbreak of war in 1939. To escape the cruel realities of the world the boy hides in the basement of his aunt‘s villa. When one night the basement is flooded during a storm, the woman decides to distract the Marek‘s imagination by building a replica of Venice underneath her house. Kolski combines the brutal images of war with the dreamlike qualities of a child‘s sensitivity and need for magic.
