Movie description:
Matching Jack is director Nadia Tass’ first film that she’s directed in her home country in more than a decade. In a Melbourne mansion worthy of Architectural Digest, dedicated thirty something homemaker Marissa seems to be living the perfect life with David, her high-flying architect hubby, and Jack, the couple’s clever 9-year-old son. Their picture-perfect life comes to a sudden halt when Jack, oddly fatigued in the middle of a soccer match, is taken in for blood tests and promptly diagnosed with leukaemia, the only possibility of a cure being a bone marrow transplant. Desperate to find a donor to save her son, Marissa undertakes a tireless and exhaustive search, including delving into the infidelities of her husband, David, in the hope that a donor might exist as a result of one of his many extramarital affairs. While many of Marissa’s encounters with posh blondes from David’s past are, at times, clunkily scripted and jarringly edited, Matching Jack finds its heart in the hospital ward where Jack shares a room with Finn, the very sick son of widowed Irish sailor Connor. Although initially annoyed by the perpetually ebullient Connor’s attempts to raise Finn’s spirits by converting his bed into a sailing ship and spinning late night yarns about magical lands, Marissa and Jack eventually warm to his company. Infused with gentle humor and carefully sidestepping sentimentality, Matching Jack is a warm story of triumph in the face of adversity.
