Movie description:
Holy Saturday. A van transporting the fireworks of a group of Athenians breaks down in a moun-tain settlement. In his attempt to buy a firework rocket for his seven-year-old son, Luan, an Albanian who works as a shepherd in the region, comes into contact with the local inhabitants, rekindling an old hostility. Local rancher Thymios can’t stand to see someone with a different religion praying in the pastures where he was raised. He offends Luan, humiliates him in front of his son and the pyrotechnicians and sends him away from the settlement. Luan leaves. But, deep inside, he is seething with rage. He returns and asks if he can buy all the fireworks. Thymios disagrees. He can’t bear the thought of a Muslim setting off fireworks at the Resurrection service together with the Christians. The night takes a dramatic turn and Easter Sunday ends in tragedy.
»The Mountain in Front« is a film about human communication and mutual respect. A communication that vanishes as fear of the stranger, of someone with another religion and someone who is different, brings to our story the conflict between Luan and Thymios. It is a clash between the foreigner and the local, the atheist and the religious man, between pigheadedness and righteous anger. The story ends in drama. Its victim is Haris. The child of immigrants. He is both Albanian and Greek, Christian and Muslim. He gets between them to help, but the mountain is tall and it’s »in Front«. The film provides food for thought and concern, offering audiences the possibility to be moved and to think up better ways of improving coexistence and respect for diversity.
