Movie description:
A 15-year-old kleptomaniac, Jake, arrives in a small Montana town searching for his prostitute mother. In the course of Jake’s troubled search for his mother, he befriends Tucker, a corn-fed local boy who catches Jake red-handed stealing the radio right out of his truck. After a foot chase and a brief scuffle, the boys ultimately become friends, discovering that each has something the other wants – Jake has a quiet mystery and total freedom, while Tucker has stability and a happy home. At first, Jake brings Tucker out of his shell, convincing him to pursue his longtime crush, the sexually wise, Lily Rose. However, when Tucker’s family nervously takes Jake in and he begins to become deeply involved with the people of the town, things grow complicated.
Fifteen-year-old Jake is homeless, a street criminal who steals things for the high the experience provides, hopping trains to Montana to meet up with his irresponsible hooker mother whom he never finds. What Jake does encounter as he is stealing a car radio is Tucker who feels pity for the homeless hungry Jake. Tucker takes him home – to a ranch and family that he is longing for – and Tucker’s father and mother and little sister Cindy gradually absorb the mysterious stranger into their home. Jake is given a room in the barn, food, and companionship and eventually a job at the father’s train yard company.
Here Jake resists stealing, encounters Grace the next door neighbor who is an unmarried mother and she seduces him. Jake also meets Tucker’s ideal girl Lily Rose and encourages Tucker to enter into a physical romance. Tucker introduces Jake to his high school friends, fascinated with Jake’s knowledge of breaking into cars and explaining how homes are easy targets for theft. As the story rolls along Jake, Tucker and Lily Rose form a tender relationship, and we gradually discover that most women Jake meets find him not only lovable but also desirable. Jake is still a kleptomaniac, but this time he steals one too many hearts.
