Movie description:
A thirteen year old kid, »the boy«, lives and works in a cemetery. The cemetery is his whole life, and growing up with the dead instils in him an obsession and respect for death. His friends depend on him: An unhappy old man, a former political prisoner yearning for death, and makeup artist for deceased, a former artist who dreams of painting a masterpiece. The boy does what he can to help them. The old man attempts suicide, but upon learning the date of his death and seeing his beautiful plot chosen for him by the boy, he is able to bear his life. Upon meeting the beautiful Maria, »the boy« gives the former artist a surprise date with her. But when Maria and the artist become closer, the boy realizes that she is the daughter of the old man. The kid thinks the old man would die unhappy if he knew of her existence and so decides to hide the truth.
A nameless orphan (Vladimir Georgiev) serving as the semi-official director of the cemetery in which he was raised lives his life among the dead in writer/director Ilian Simenov’s sombre drama. The orphan has spent nearly his whole life on the well-fed grounds of the vast cemetery he resides over. Aside from the silent masses who dwell beneath the earth, the only friends that the orphan has are mortuary make-up artist Ivan (Samuel Fintzi) and old man Angel (Itzhak Fintzi). When Angel’s longtime adversary arrives as the cemetery to be prepared for burial, the elderly man is able to breathe easy for the first time in nearly thirty years. As the orphan begins to have a premonition that someone will die within ten days time, the deceased’s daughter Maria (Diana Dobreva) befriends the boy and begins to suspect that Angel may in fact be her biological father. As the army begins bringing in piles of war casualties for burial under the cold dark cloak of night, the folks who spend their lives among the dead soon begin to feel the specter of death looming ever closer on the horizon.
