Tragicomedy – France
Production year: 2008
Movie length: 93 minutes
Director: Robin Davis
Movie description:
1870. France declares war on Prussia. The Barbier family from Versailles confidently wait for the war to start.
The bourgeois have only admiration for the French army and bet on how many days it will until the French army sings the French national anthem – »La Marseillaise« – in Berlin. Various characters are portrayed in this story of one of French history’s most enthralling episodes, such as Monsieur Pion, the teacher, Madame Arnal, grandfather Toussaint, Beaugrain, the retired Captain, the local tobacconist and above all the anarchist Merlin. Everyone has their own opinion which they don’t hesitate to express. They bet, they get wound up, they cheer for victory and refuse to be defeated. The lazy local bourgeoisie have just one goal: to survive the town’s infighting. Surviving is the priority at any cost! Even if it means losing one’s honour.
Their son, 12-year-old Jean Barbier, is disappointed and critical of their cowardice and of the pitiful world he lives in. Luckily for him, his elderly neighbour Father Merlin comforts him and sets him back on the right track, telling him about the atrocity of war, the dangers of patriotism and of the importance of giving and forgiving.
