Movie description:
Pablito sees a pedal push car in a shop window and it immediately tugs at his heart. His father would like very much to buy it for him, and he even makes a down payment, but there are other problems that the family faces: Pablito has an older brother in jail (though he doesn’t know it); the repo man is after everything the family has (in the persona of Pablito’s uncle, a bailiff and Franco political appointee); Pablito’s Dad makes a very poor living by giving away stuff he should be selling, and by his bizarre career choice of training secretaries to do shorthand in Esperanto. When Pablito’s Dad is arrested for possession anti-Franco leaflets, things might actually begin to get better – except Pablito loves his Dad more than anything...
The story of a 9-year-old boy begins during Easter holidays in 1959 Spain. The sentimental chronicle reflects the atmosphere of the times and technical progress. Little Pablo would like to have a pedal push car, which he goes to admire in the shop windows opposite the house in which he lives. However, his parents are not among the richest. The dreams of the little boy, the efforts of his parents to fulfil his wish and the surrounding complicated world are portrayed through the eyes of the boy and reality is gradually revealed. When Pablito sees that nothing is what it seems at first sight, he dreams up his own happy ending. The topic of reflection of the dictatorship, which is very popular in Spanish cinema, is handled as an optimistic view of a not very happy period of national history.
