For a Moment, Freedom
Movie description:
FREEDOM, FOR A MOMENT is warm and gripping story about Iranian refugees, who try to reach to the safety of Europe through Turkey. However, the difficult mountain track to Turkey is the just the beginning of their ordeals, as they will not be welcomed with open arms and hearts by aid-workers, but overworked UN officials, with whom one can talk with only after standing in a live queue for days. FREEDOM, FOR A MOMENT is about the crossing of fates of different refugees. They all have their separate stories, they have different reasons for leaving Iran and different dreams of the future. The film talks also about the helplessness of bureaucracy in helping the refugees: waiting for a life-changing decision in front of the gates of the UN representation in Ankara drives many of them to desperate measures. Despite all of the above, the film still retains mostly happy and life affirming attitude. The director portrays each refugee with obvious empathy, but also with charm and positive undertones.

Fast-moving and packed with action, »For a Moment Freedom« tells of the odyssey of three Iranian-Kurdish groups of refugees: a married couple with a child, two young men with two children, and two men who are friends despite the differences between them. They have all managed to escape from Iran and Iraq, but now they are stuck in the Turkish capital; although freedom is at last almost within their grasp, first they have to wait in a dubious hotel, hoping each day that their applications for asylum will be approved. This enforced break in their journey towards independence is characterised by both hope and utter uncertainty. The young Austrian-Iranian filmmaker Arash T. Riahi depicts the plight of people trying to flee their homeland and the curious, transitory state of asylum-seekers with tragic comedy and great suspense.
