Movie description:
Tahimik portrays a jeepney driver serving as president of the Wernher von Braun Fan Club. He listens non-stop to the Voice of America radio show while dreaming of watching a launch at Cape Keneddy. Suddenly, he finds an opportunity to fulfill those dreams. An American offers him a job in France, then Germany and eventually in America. Sadly, the young driver discovers that there is no promised land. His utopian fantasy become a »perfumed nightmare«.
Kidlat Tahimik is pictured as an ambitious young man from the time he took toy car across the bridge that provides the only access to his village as a young boy, to being circumcised, to travelling by plane to Europe. He spends his entire life in an effort to find the bridges to his cultural identity. This dream and obsession with bridges as the true marks of progress, provides the text for a lyrical and thought provoking film that will lead Kidmat in unusual directions
One of my sharpest memories of cinema is the tuli (circumcision) scene from Kidlat Tahimik’s 1977 film Mababangong Bangungot, where kids had their foreskin chopped off before jumping into the river while chewing bayabas leaves. I saw it in the 1980s though, after my own relatively painless genital mutilation made me realize how lucky I was.
