Rhapsody in August
Movie description:
An excellent film about four grandchildren spending their Summer with their grandmother on the outskirts of Nagasaki, and learning about their grandfather’s death in the 1945 bombing.
The kids receive a letter from their self-absorbed parents, vacationing in Hawaii, who have discovered a long-lost older millionaire brother of the grandmother, and the kids try to convince the grandmother to take them there to meet him, but she wants to wait until after August 9th, the date of the dropping of the bomb.
Much of the film deals with how the entire matter has become so taboo as a topic of discussion, with Richard Gere making an appearance in the final quarter of the film as the Japanese/caucasion son of the long-lost brother; They never knew how the father/grandfather died. The repeated images of the melted playground bars are quite disturbing, but those who feel the film is too one-sided have missed the point of the grandmother’s stories.
