The young son of a Danish filmmaker records a video diary of the time spent living and attending school in a village in the west of Ireland.
Carlsen’s record of the year that his young son Hjalmar spent as a visitor at the village school in Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare, learning English, Irish and religion, and making friends with local children.
The film tells the story of two brothers, Hjalmar and Simon, who move to Ireland with their parents. Hjalmar begins in a tiny village school, but doesn’t understand a word they are saying. He feels utterly alone, but gradually he learns English and makes new friends. Suddenly both he and his little brother, Simon, are a part of everyday life in the little village on the west coast of Ireland. They are no longer strangers.
