»Underage« is a documentary about underage male prostitution in Thailand showing the rotten existing reality about poverty, social problem, dream, and choices that these boys make. Also, the documentary reflects the deep rooted problem that resides in the Thai society and culture.
»Underage« is a video documentation aimed at understanding the minds of underage male prostitutes in a most candid and visceral way. Author wanted the process to uncover a bit of the life, choice, and consequences that these young boys are experiencing.
Although highly exploitative as a documentary to the point that you can easily accuse the directors, among the others, for a sexual glance at the kids, (the series of photos under the same name by Pranphiroj are even more sexual orientated) »Underage« depicts, in a few minutes, with minimal but emphatic way the still existed problem of underage prostitution in Thailand and its roots, that is poverty.
Thailand has a reputation as the Asian epicentre of the sex industry. It is estimated that the country has 800,000 child prostitutes, who collectively generate about 3% of the Gross National Product – a form of exploitation which has become an international scandal. By means of photography and video Phanphiroj tries to fathom the thoughts and experiences of underage male prostitutes. These are penetrating portraits of lost souls, which call up questions about social problems, sexuality, corruption and morality.
